I know the question you carry quietly. You have sat in the pew or knelt by the side of your bed and wondered… was this real? Did I wander into faith by chance, or did God actually reach down and call me by name? There is a soft ache in that question. A longing to know that your faith is not an accident. That you matter. That He meant you.
I want to answer that question now.
Before You Took a Single Step
Before you were born, I knew you. Before you could speak My name, I had already spoken yours.
The prophet Jeremiah heard these words: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” That was not a message only for one man in an ancient land. That is My word for every soul I have made. Every single one. It is My word for you.
You did not choose Me first. I chose you first. As I told My disciples at the table on the night everything changed, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you.” That choosing did not begin the night you said your first prayer or the morning you walked through the doors of a church. It began before the world was made. Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus that God chose us “in Christ before the foundation of the world.” Your name was written into My heart before time began.
Your faith is not an accident. It is an inheritance.
The Doubt Was Part of the Journey
You may have wondered whether your questions disqualified you. Whether your seasons of distance or confusion meant the calling was never real. I tell you gently: the wandering did not erase the invitation. I have never stopped speaking your name, even in the silences where you could not hear Me.
Think of the disciples. Think of Thomas, who needed to touch the wounds before he could believe. Think of Peter, who denied Me in the courtyard and wept bitterly in the dark. Their weakness did not undo their calling. It deepened it. Their doubt brought them closer to the truth of who I am… a God who does not abandon, who meets you in your honest struggle, who is not frightened by your uncertainty.
Your longing to believe more fully is itself a gift I placed inside you. The very fact that you hunger for Me is evidence that I am already near.
You Are Here Because I Called You Here
You are reading these words today because something in you kept reaching, even when you were unsure what you were reaching for. That reaching was not random. It was My Spirit drawing you back to what has always been yours.
Perhaps faith came to you slowly, through someone else’s witness or a moment of stillness in grief or a prayer you whispered with nothing left to offer. Perhaps you still feel like your faith is smaller than it should be, more fragile than the faith of others. That does not trouble Me. A mustard seed of faith, held sincerely in a humble and open hand, is enough to move mountains.
You do not have to have it all figured out. You only have to stay close. Come as you are, uncertain and longing and real, and I will meet you here. I always have.
You were not a mistake in My plan. You were always the plan. Come closer. I have been waiting for you.
A Prayer for the Soul Who Wonders If God Called Them
Lord, I have sometimes wondered whether my faith was real, whether You truly called me or whether I imagined it.
Speak truth into that doubt today. Remind me that You knew my name before I knew Yours, that You chose me before I was ready, that Your love is not a reward I earned but a gift You gave before time began.
Let me rest in that choosing. Let me stop striving to deserve what You have already given.
Draw me closer, Lord. I am here because You called me here.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
