TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

St. Margaret of Cortona – Proper Nutrition for the Soul

Emotions are a fascinating part of our human existence. They possess the power to envelop us in a diverse range of energies, from the glow of happiness to the depths of sadness. They are the vibrant colors that paint the canvas of our lives, that have a huge impact on our daily experiences. In many ways, emotions are the lifeblood that keeps us human, reminding us of our capacity to feel and connect with the world around us.

Like the sustenance we seek for our physical bodies, emotions nourish our very souls. They provide a vital source of energy that fuels our passions, aspirations, and relationships. Just as a balanced diet supports our physical well-being, a rich emotional landscape supports our spiritual growth and fulfillment.

Just as consuming unhealthy food can lead to poor energy levels and physical health, our emotions can undergo a similar transformation when we neglect their nourishment and well-being.

Imagine a person who regularly indulges in a diet consisting of processed foods, high in sugars and saturated fats. They may experience moments of instant gratification from temporary bursts of energy & pleasure, but over time their energy levels plummet, leaving them feeling sluggish, fatigued, and unable to perform at their best. Their physical health deteriorates as they become more prone to illness and their body loses its vitality.

Likewise when we disregard the nurturing of our emotions they too can suffer. If we constantly suppress or ignore our feelings, dismissing their importance, we deny ourselves the opportunity for emotional growth and fulfillment. Just as unhealthy food choices rob our bodies of essential nutrients, neglecting our emotional well-being deprives our souls of the sustenance they require.

Using Nutrition to heal

Our soul craves for certain ‘nutrition,’ much like our bodies do. It longs for love, compassion, peace, and a connection with the Divine. The same way our body craves for wholesome nutrition, our soul yearns for spiritual sustenance. It’s not just about feeding our physical form, but also about nurturing our spiritual essence.

When we feed our soul with love, compassion, and spiritual wisdom, that is when we can finally start to heal.

Understanding Cravings

When we crave a certain type of comfort food our bodies actually crave a certain nutrient. More often than not nutrient deficiencies cause certain moods, so it follows that if you don’t replenish that nutrient you’re going to keep on craving the comfort food until you either get an emotional boost or replenish the nutrient somehow. So next time you’re craving comfort food have a look at the nutrients that make you crave the food and eat something that’s jam packed with that instead. You’ll start feeling better in no time!

Embrace a Spiritually-Healthy Lifestyle

The same way we adopt a healthy lifestyle for physical well-being, we need to embrace practices that nourish our souls.

  • Practice gratitude: Gratitude, akin to a wholesome meal, fills our soul with contentment and peace.
  • Show love and compassion: The act of giving love and compassion to others is a balm for the soul, much like how a balanced diet keeps our body healthy.
  • Nurture faith and trust in God: Faith is the staple diet of the soul. It’s essential, like the air we breathe.
  • Commit to personal growth: Seek wisdom and personal development – these are the ‘vitamins’ that nourish our soul and propel us forward on our spiritual journey.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Our bodies are a divine gift, and by nourishing our souls, we honor this gift.

Spiritual Detox

Just as our bodies need detoxification to remove impurities and toxins, our souls too require a ‘spiritual detox’ to cleanse our spirit of negative thoughts and feelings, helping us to realign ourselves with God.

Over time, we may unknowingly accumulate negative emotions and thoughts, much like the body accumulates toxins. These could be feelings of resentment, guilt, anger, or anxiety. Just as the accumulation of toxins in our physical bodies can lead to illness, these negative emotions can cause a spiritual imbalance, distancing us from God’s grace.

Self-reflection, practicing forgiveness and prayer are ways that we can identify negative emotions within us and ask God for the grace to overcome them.

When we start focusing on our physical nutrition our souls become happier and healthier too. Don’t let temptation get the better of you. You can change the way you feel about just about anything with the proper nutrition.

Let Us Pray

Oh, the Divine Healer, we come before You, seeking Your grace and mercy.
We understand that our bodies are but vessels carrying our immortal souls, which need to be nurtured with divine love and wisdom.
May our hearts be receptive to Your divine love, soaking in every drop of grace You shower upon us.
May our souls yearn for Your eternal light, growing stronger and reaching higher in the process.
Like a famished traveler finding sustenance in a humble meal, may our souls find nourishment in Your love, compassion, and divine wisdom.
Just as the body is replenished by nutritious food, let our souls be nourished by acts of kindness, gratitude, and faith in You.

St. Margaret of Cortona, Pray for Us.
