St. Rita of Cascia – When You Have Prayed for the Same Thing for Years

Dear friend, I know the prayer you are tired of praying. As the patroness of impossible causes, of hopeless cases, of the things everyone else has quietly given up on, I was not given that title because my life was easy. I was given it because I waited. I asked God for the same thing for so long that the asking became part of who I was. And I want to sit beside you in that waiting today, because I remember exactly how it feels.

You have brought this intention to God so many times that you almost feel embarrassed to bring it again. The same son. The same illness. The same marriage. The same door that will not open. You have prayed novena after novena, lit candle after candle, and nothing visible has changed. And somewhere along the way a quiet voice began whispering that maybe God is not listening, or maybe He is listening and the answer is simply no.

What My Own Long Waiting Looked Like

I wanted to give my life to God as a young girl. My parents arranged a marriage instead, to a man whose temper made our home a hard place to live. I prayed for him for eighteen years. Eighteen years of asking God to soften a heart that showed no sign of softening. There were nights I could see no evidence at all that heaven had heard me.

Then his heart did change. Late, but truly. And soon after, he was killed, and my two sons burned to avenge him. So I began praying again, this time that God would take my sons before He let them become murderers. That is what a mother’s desperate prayer sounds like when there is nothing left to bargain with. God answered that one too, in a way that broke me and saved them.

I tell you this not to make your waiting sound small, but so you know I am not speaking to you from a comfortable place. I am speaking from inside the same darkness you are standing in.

Persistence Is Not Nagging God

Here is what those decades taught me. The long prayer was never me trying to wear God down. God is not a reluctant judge who finally gives in if you knock hard enough. Our Lord Himself told us to pray always and not lose heart, and He meant it as a mercy, not a burden.

The waiting was doing something in me. Every time I brought the same petition back to God, I was saying again that I trusted Him with it. That trust is not a small offering. It may be the largest thing you have ever given Him. A prayer repeated for ten years is ten years of a soul refusing to let go of God’s hand in the dark.

You think your long prayer is evidence of failure. I tell you it is evidence of faith. The person who has stopped believing does not keep asking.

God Is Not Silent, He Is Working Underneath

Scripture says that for those who love God, all things work together for good. It does not say all things feel good, or arrive on time, or make sense while they are happening. Underneath the years that look empty to you, God has been at work in ways you cannot yet see.

Sometimes He is preparing the person you are praying for, quietly, without telling you. Sometimes He is preparing you, so that when the answer comes you will be able to receive it without it destroying you. Sometimes He is answering in a shape you did not request and will only recognize much later.

The roses that bloomed in the snow at the end of my life were not the reward for my patience. They were God’s gentle way of saying that He had been listening the whole time.

Do Not Put the Prayer Down

So bring it again. Today. The same words, the worn-out ones, the ones you are sick of saying. Bring them without shame, the way a child brings the same request to a father who loves being asked.

And if you cannot find the words anymore, simply hold the intention in your heart and let your presence before the tabernacle be the prayer. God reads what you cannot speak.

I will carry it with you. That is what intercession means. You are not asking into an empty sky. There is a whole communion of us standing behind you, and I know this particular road well.

Your prayer has not been lost. It has been held, year after year, by a God who never once looked away from you or from the one you love.

A Prayer to St. Rita for the Impossible Cause

St. Rita, patroness of impossible causes, you waited long years without seeing the answer, and you did not let go of God.

Stand with me now in this prayer I have carried so long it has worn a groove in my heart.

Where I am discouraged, ask God to steady me. Where I am tempted to stop asking, hold my hands open a little longer.

Lord Jesus, I place this intention in Your care again today. I do not understand Your timing. I trust Your love.

St. Rita of Cascia, pray for us. Amen.
